Good Hygiene Habits for Children

If you have small children at home, you likely understand that teaching them good hygiene practices can be a struggle. They’re curious, they like to touch everything they see, and they’re apt to put their hands in their mouths frequently. When your kids are young, it’s the perfect time to start working on good hygiene practices. Here are some ways on how to teach kids about hygiene.

  1. Hand washing.

As you probably know, washing your hands is one of the quickest ways to stop the spread of germs. Because children tend to touch a lot of things, it’s important to show them how and when to wash their hands:

  • Before eating.
  • After using the bathroom.
  • When they come in from outside.
  • After coughing or sneezing into their hands.
  • After touching raw meat.
  • After playing with pets.
  • After spending time with someone who’s ill.
  • When their hands look or feel dirty.

Show them how to wash their hands properly and then give them little reminders after each of the above events. If you can, try to make it a game or activity.

  1. Healthy skin.

Even at such a young age, keeping healthy skin is a good hygiene habit. But, they’re going to need your help at first. Every night after bath time, help them check for any new rashes, scabs, or bumps (these are all common for children). Some of these blemishes can be contagious, so it’s important to show kids how to keep them clean. If you do this with them every night, they’ll soon be able to do it on their own.

  1. Sneezing and coughing.

Getting sick is going to happen eventually, no matter how hard we try to stop it. The best way to teach your kids is by example. You’ll be amazed what they can pick up by just watching you do something. Even if they aren’t sick, show them how to cover their cough and sneeze with tissues, handkerchiefs or elbows instead of their hands. Remind them each time they forget, and then send them in to wash their hands.

  1. Nail health.

Fingernails are a hotbed for germs and bacteria. When children are constantly touching their face, germs stuck under their nails can cause an illness. It’s important to show them how to use a nailbrush to clean under their nails every night. Also, set up a specific day and time every week to clip their fingernails – this helps to cut down on germs and dirt buildup. Try to work with them on not biting their nails as well.
